"Gaffer tape. Oh, it's such sexy sticky stuff. Can't get enough of it. Rip and stick, rip and stick. Ooooh."

Karen's notes: Gaffer tape = Duct tape.

Adam was quiet again last night, I saved this one from Friday night. I love the little pleasure-shiver at the end. Who knew duct tape could be so titillating?

Added later: I've been advised in the comments that duct tape and gaffer tape are in fact different. So perhaps there IS something extremely thrilling about gaffer tape that I've been missing all these years with my misguided loyalty to duct tape.

  3. Gaffer Tape is not the same as Duct Tape. Although it has some similarlarities, it's designed for differnet purposes. Primarily for gaffers - people in a stage lighting crew - to stick cables down, but also useful for many other things.

  4. To be honest gaffer tape is not really the same as duct tape.

They seem very much alike but Duct tape is made out of mostly plastic, gaffer tape is made out of cloth.
The first usually being silvers the second black (but can have any colour)
my experience tells me that duct tape has a better adhesive.

  5. gaffer tape is made of cotton, which makes it easy to tear into strips for taping down cables and such. That, and any quick fixes that need to be done (I've seen a costume rack in a theater's change room lashed together using gaffer) Duct tape, on the other hand, is far more annoying unless you have a pair of scissors handy.

To Anon 7 June 11:57, really? I've always found gaffer to be better. But then again, I may be biased after wrestling with ducting (who wouldn't thought: duct tape for ducting) for a weekend - makes one disinclined to attribute anything positive to it.

  6. Gaffer tape is definitely NOT duct tape. But is is definitely AWESOME. Best stuff on earth.

  7. Besides the already mentioned differences between duct and gaffer tape, there is one more very important difference. Gaffer tape, like masking tape, is designed to be removable. Duct tape is not. If you try to remove duct tape, a glue residue is left behind.

  8. I call it Gaff tape. I assure you, once you've used it, you generally think, "Wow, where was my life without gaff tape?"

  9. I once called my grandmother an "Old Hag" in my sleep when I was a kid. We were on vacation with my mother & my sister. My mother shared a bed with my sister because my sister used to kick, and I shared a bed with my Grandmother... I sat up in bed & she's a light sleeper & felt it so she woke up and asked if I had to go to the bathroom (which was around the corner). I pointed straight forward (to a wall) & said "I'm going this way" she kept correcting me about going to the bathroom till finally I said "No you old hag I'm going this way!" and then I simply laid back down & proceeded to sleep...
guess I've always been a talker but I only got stories from friends... & now that I'm married my husband sleeps too soundly & talks too much on his own to hear anything I might be saying...
we really need to get a recorder of our own!

  17. Also... "duct" tape is actually "duck" tape. Duck is a type of waterproofed cloth. When adhesive is added, you get duck tape. It's often used by HVAC personnel on "ducts", hence the confusion. Add to this a brand name of duck tape is "Duck Tape" and uses a duck as its logo, which further confuses people. But it really is "duck" tape, named after the material used.

  18. you've been missing the greatness that is gaffer's tape because of the price differenece. Seriously go buy some, just to have... although I'll admit that if by gaffer's tape = duck tape, you meant that "gaffer's tape is to stage crews as duck tape is to everyone else in the world" you were right.

  19. If you don't believe gaffa tape can be sexy, just listen to this Kate Bush song!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXWmMIw9-X8&feature=related

  20. I was going to point out that gaffer's tape and duct tape are different, hehe. But as Anon at 16:03 pointed out, yep, gaffer's tape is to stage and TV production crews as duct tape is to the rest of the world. :D

  25. The tape was originally invented for the US military as a waterproofing aid. As it was waterproof it was referred to as DUCK tape. However, after the war, it was used by people in the housing industry to join heating/airconditioning ducts. The colour of the tape was changed from green to the silver we all know and love and it was referred to as DUCT tape. Either name is correct though 'duct' is more common these days, unless referring to the tape made by the company, Duck.
    *is full of useless information*

Also, the sidebar is showing me an ad for M&S stick on bras O_O

  26. I personally don't find gaffer's tape stickier than duct tape, but it's still pretty strong and that it doesn't leave a residue makes it very, very awesome. But it is more costly.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not to mention all the nefarious uses to which either of them can be put...... 7@=Q

  28. Should have used gorilla tape. That's where it's at lol.

  29. Dear Karen and Adam,

Thank you for all of he wonderful anticdotes you give us every single day. My husband has been very ill and out of work for almost a year now. The highlight of his day is reading your blog. Everyday, like a child, he hurries to the computer to have me read your latest post. It truly brightens his day. Thank you so much for giving my husband a little bit of his happiness back every single day. -A

  30. The real difference between the two: duct tape hurts when you pull it off!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ohhh how can it always get funnier?!

I have to agree with Molly - loyalty to duct tape is NEVER misguided! Duct tape and baling twine... I am very intrigued, though, with the idea of something as sticky as duct tape that does not leave the residue behind. Darn shame it's so expensive.

  32. As a stage manager in the theatre world, I must concur that gaffers tape is some pretty sexy stuff. It's definitely something I use on a day to day basis, and it makes my life so much better. Gaff tape is just as strong as duct tape, only it's removable, and makes backstage safety easily accomplished, so you don't have actors tripping on cords that aren't taped down:(

  33. I have to wonder if some of the commenters are confusing duct tape for electrical tape. Electrical tape is smooth black plastic/vinyl, and it has to be cut with scissors. Duct tape is silver, with fibers running through it. You can indeed rip and stick just like Adam says-no scissors needed.

  34. Yeah, I like the "Handyman's Secret Weapon" too. Kudos to anyone who gets where that phrase came from!

  35. Merchandise thought - can you get the gaffer tape comment printed onto gaffer tape?????

    ReplyDelete
  36. the difference is gaffer tape is theatrical in use. therefore, dramatic tape. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Please, please, please make some merch with the gaff tape quote! I work in theatre and would LOVE to have a shirt or pair of work gloves with this written on it.

  39. I don't know where everyone is getting this magical residue-free gaffer tape from, but my crew needs some. Ours always leaves a residue on the walls, equipment &c if we leave it up for more than a few weeks.

And yes, we do sometimes need to leave stuff up for weeks on end.

  40. I love gaff tape, my middle school tech teacher gave us all a roll in his Honors Tech Class for graduation (all three of us that is). needless to say, we were not very mature with it
