  3. Reminds me of the Kate Bush song "Dreamtime", which is a single D chord throughout.

  8. @ Simon-

I'm a full time freelancer, and hate spec work demands as much as the next - but in this case I'm inclined to give some leeway.

Karen and Adam haven't made specific samples mandatory, and anyone can see that how different artists interpret the material will be key. It's kind of necessary to do an audition.

I know better than many how the freelance market has been degraded by spec work, but I'm inclined to let this be - People can decide for themselves if they want to participate.

If I had any artistic talent (I'm a writer, alas), I'd be all over this as a fabulous opportunity - can you imagine being known as the illustrator for STM?

I'm encouraging my sister (a brilliant illustrator) to throw her hat in the ring.

  9. omg illustrating for you guys would be the best job ever. I don't mind spec work, I'm still a student and I do free stuff for my family and friends all the time.

Definitely going to interpret some of those quotes, but I gotta go to class today. Expect an e-mail from me later!

  10. I love the chipper bye-bye that ends so many of Adam's insults.

  11. When in college I was also taught spec work isn't a good thing. Too many times the client will steal the ideas and have their in house designer do the same thing. I'm not sure how many illustrations this will be but since they don't have an "in house" designer...
Also while I was in college, (as an "A" student, I might brag) I saw a whole lot of untalented people get jobs as graphic designers.
Anyway this assignment sounds like fun. I would enter, but then it would be work...

  12. I love the fact that STM always sounds so happy when he says "bye bye"...

  13. @Msm - Very good point, and one I almost brought up except my post was too long. I wouldn't hesitate to do a sample for Karen and Adam on a trust basis - but I routinely refuse to do spec work in many cases for precisely the reason you name.

Unscrupulous buyers will have an in-house writer or a cheaper outsourced writer rip off a suggested outline and leave the original author hanging; often with a lie such as 'this wasn't what we were looking for' when in fact it's having to pay for it that they don't like.

I'd trust Adam and Karen, though :)

  14. Admittedly I am an actor not an artist, but I personally don't see anything wrong with what they are requesting. They want to find an artist who they like, and how else are they going to find one? I have worked on auditions for a month plus then PAID to submit it, obviously with no guarantees for return.

But perhaps I am missing something here. However you offer no solutions, only whine at the problem.

  15. Well, I guess there's not going to be a Broadway production of "My Dinner With STM"...... 7@=Q

And as for illustration: sounds interesting, but my scanner's on the fritz.....

  17. I say let the viewers vote and pay by the T-shirt sold. The more artists the better. We all have various points-of-view when trying to assimilate our senses around STM's nocturnal expulsions.

  18. OH KAREN! Doesn't your brother put on plays or musicals? I think My Life with STM would be fabulous! What a brilliant idea LA/wts. Better yet, my life as STM. Even better, STM's view: I Only Come Out At Night. lol.
