Karen's notes: Here's what you guys missed from Saturday and Sunday's failed posts.
By the way, Adam had to tell me that "numpty" is an insult, approximately equal to "moron". Americans, do we have this term?
I've never even heard the word "numpty" and I just assumed it was gibberish that comes from the whistling of air through bad teeth.
ReplyDeletewe have numpty here in NZ. it's an awesome insult. my current favourite, though, is 'pinhead' which, with alliteration, sounds great - for example "What would that policy pinhead know?" :)
ReplyDelete"Numpty" is not prevalent in American English (dubbed "Americanese" by a lovely septugenarian British lady I worked with as a teenager). It's mainly British/Aussie/NZ, much like "bloody" and "bollocks" (I love how Brits say "bollocks". I'd use it myself, but when I say it, it has nowhere near the right effect with my accent :P)
ReplyDeleteI first learned of it from a Brit (who lives in an honest-to-God castle, no less), who explained to me (my English was learned in the US) that a numpty is worse than a "bloody banana" but not as bad as a "stupid git." In all honesty though, he was the only person I've ever known to use "bloody banana" as an insult, and not as a result of a very tragic yet hilarious accident.
Since that enlightening day, "numpty" is one of my favourite insults, and I've taught it to many Americans, though I rank it not as a "moron," but somewhere between a "dummy" and an "idiot"
Personally, I am waiting for a city or college starting with an N to call their sports team the Numpties. I mean really, who wouldn't want to see a game between the Nottingham Numpties and the Abilene Arsehats?
I think Numpty is originally a Scots term, (I think it was featured on the BBC a few weeks ago as voted the favourite word in Scotland!) but is a fabulous gentle insult. I interpret it along the lines of 'bumbling fool'. :)
ReplyDeleteI like numpty as an insult because its one of those gentle insults.
ReplyDeleteI had an impression "numpty" was more Irish than Scots, but that's purely from hearing a couple of Irish entertainers use it.
ReplyDeleteEither way, Ori is right both about "numpty" being a gentle insult and "bloody banana" not being commonly heard outside Clown ICU.
Yes, numpty is a gentle insult. If someone called me a numpty I'd know it wasn't serious and, depending on the cercumstances, might even agree. If someone called me a moron, I'd probably be a bit upset.
ReplyDeleteFor example: Writing 'cercumstances' and not 'circumstances' makes me a numpty.
ReplyDeleteHehe....."STOP EXISTING" Got to be a t-shirt.
ReplyDeleteNumpty is definitely a 'soft' insult in Australia!
ReplyDeleteThis site has a great & detailed explanation for 'Numpty' http://www.numpty.info/
ReplyDeletePersonaly I've always thought of Numpty as something in the really of Village Idiot.
One can also change the gravity of the insult with expletives; f'ing Numpty!
As a Scot, I can confirm that 'numpty' is Scottish slang (although I've heard Irish use it a lot too), meaning idiot, but in a gentle way- it can even be used affectionately given the right context! (I often call my boyfriend a numpty when he does something a bit silly)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I found that when I lived in England for a while, they didn't know what I meant by numpty, so it seems to be very localised dialect.
I used to work with a Ukrainian girl who had picked up the word "Numpty"... it sounded SO funny in her accent!!!
ReplyDelete"Numpty" is possibly one of my favourite words. I'm originally from the south of England and people seem to use it a fair bit. However when I moved to Wales no one I knew seemed to have heard it before so I guess it's only an elite few who know it...
ReplyDeleteequivalent to the American mild 'doofus'.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to adam in this one and it reminded me of this crazy character on Ice age 3 with the dinosaurs. the one with the patch over his Eyes can't think of his name nowbut anyway for some reason I heard the
ReplyDelete"There's something worse out there and I call him...Ruby"
The way Adam talks about kitty fishing just gave me that same like level of insanity LOL
Nope, never heard of "numpty" before. But I may have to start using it. ;)
ReplyDelete"Stop doing that. Stop EXISTING. Just stop."
ReplyDeleteAnd on the back? DO SOMETHING!
A PSA from STM. Brilliant!
I have to agree. We didn't have the term
ReplyDeletebefore but I'm willing to net dollars to

Awesome quotes today.
i live in london, and often hear footie fans calling eachother or football players "numpties", ie. "ROONY YOU NUMPTY!"
ReplyDeleteIn Canadian English, which is a combination of Proper British English and English spoken in the United States, the term numpty is not commonly spoken.
ReplyDeleteNumpty is a Scottish word used as an affectionate insult. Ah ya Numpty! is much more friendly than Oi ya stupid git.
ReplyDeleteYou see Scottish and Irish Comedians use it a lot on TV
My brother used to insult people with the terms "numbnuts" and "numbskull" with basically the same connotation of idiot or moron. I think I like numpty better. :)
ReplyDeletehumpty, numpty, numbnuts!
ReplyDeletea fish outta water.
a kitty stop'n go

I picked up "numpty" along with "muppet" while working in England a few years back. In my mind they both are used to refer to somebody as a "dumb ass," though "pinhead" as mentioned in another comment would probably be about right, too.
ReplyDeleteHeh heh heh, I haven't heard numpty for a while.
ReplyDelete"Dear? Where's the dead cat?"
ReplyDelete"It's in the soap dish."
"But there's - soap - in the soap dish...."
"The cat's in the soap!"
"What??"
"Yes, dear - there's a *whole* dead cat in every bar of DEAD CAT SOAP!"

The question is not how you catch the dead kitties, but who is throwing them!
ReplyDeleteNumpty = Numbskull
ReplyDeletestop existing t-shirt!!!!
ReplyDeleteIm so very VERY happy numpty (or knumpty as I would spell it) was used as an insult. I would use it regularly and noone in northern ireland knows what it means! I maintain it must be a scottish term, probably something I picked up from my mother =D
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you've considered making a T-shirt which reads, "Stop doing that. Stop EXISTING. Just stop."
ReplyDeletei'm an american...numpty could be a form of numbnuts. i think it works. :)
ReplyDeleteAdam WTF - "Dead kitty fishing, numpty. And that's how I catch those dead kitties".
