I had that bear! You could put a cassette tape in his back and his mouth moved in time with the dialogue! ... that is... untill i broke his lower jaw off... then he was very creepy! *humms the theme tune* "come dream with me toniiiiiiiight....."

ReplyDeleteI always wondered if you could play regular cassettes in there: it would be rather cool to have that thing screaming out death metal, or something equally inappropriate....
If you watch the commercial, check out the hypnotic looks on the kids faces when Teddy Ruxpin creepily asks to be their friend. Weird! I remember the cartoon and my brother was obsessed with this creepy thing.

I remember a bunch of computer hackers with Commodore 64s bought a bunch of them, and hacked into them making them say very profane things, and inviting all manners of sex acts! Then they put them back on the shelves leading to great consternation among the parents of the unlucky children who received them! Kind of shot Teddy Ruxpin down in flames!

To the Anonymous who mentioned the hypnotic look on kids faces... I think there was a time in the 80's when every photo album and every montage photo frame in every house included a photo of a small child being hypnotized/freaked out by a Teddy Ruxpin.

ReplyDeleteAww, I loved my Teddy Ruxpin. Listened to him almost every night when I was a kid. Had tons of the tapes with books, several different outfits for him and even had Grubby. Grubby could be hooked up to Teddy so they both told the stories. :)
