Especially the desire to exterminate all vegetarians (but he does hate lentils.)

Karen's notes: A reader emailed to let us know that STM has been BANNED in the United Arab Emirates! What did it, do you think? The constant stream of self-adoration? The repeated mention of ninjas? The unabating derision of lentils? How, oh how, did we manage to offend?

Well, thanks for letting us know, Rachel. I hope you do manage to make your VPN work so that we can keep you as a reader, preferably without you ending up in prison.

  1. Haha I love this blog! I've read through a lot of these and for some reason i think that the person he seems to love to insult so much is a woman. Maybe STM has a stalker? XD

Anyway, I could imagine the 'Ta da!' one on a T-shirt or something

  2. The UAE bans all the good stuff! Maybe they really love lentils.

The last is definitely tshirt material.

  3. Haha! Yes, the UAE bans a lot of stuff. But it can be un-banned again.. You never know!
I guess it must be the swearing once in a while.

I totally agree on the last one - definitely t-shirt material!

  5. I have a feeling the fact that STM is Jewish has something to do with the ban..

    ReplyDelete
  6. I would bet it's because of the rather "distasteful" language and imagery he sometimes uses.

  7. @Anonymous: while Adam is Jewish, we don't know for sure that STM is Jewish, too. Santa Claus has recently been appearing in a lot of his ramblings, and I think he's mentioned Jesus before, too.

  8. wow... UAE is harsh.... congrats STM on getting banned in your first whole country!!!

@ jackie - actually in Judiaism, Jesus was considered a prophet like Muhammad. not the savior of our souls like Christians believe him to me. And, Santa Claus is most likely based on a historical figure of SinterKlaas (aka Saint Nicholas). Who was a Greek Bishop in Myra, which is mordern Turkey now.

  9. oops typos.... meant "me" as "be"

  10. Wrong. Jesus is absolutely not considered a prophet in Judaism. Get your facts right before you spread false information.

  11. I think he must have meant that Jesus is considered a prophet in Islam, which is true.

  14. Karen,
What is your ancestral background? You've said you and Adam are Jewish so I am wondering if - based on your maiden name - your family are displaced WWII Jews. Just curious.

  15. Oh, to know what the egg cup incident was!

  16. @Michelle - Good eye. I come from a family of Lithuanian Jews. But I'm fourth generation American, so we were out of Eastern Europe before WWII. Our original name was Slavitski (I'm honestly not even sure if that was how is was spelled), it was simplified to Slavick at Ellis Island.

  17. Heh - my great-grandpa, who was Slovalk, had his name misspelled at Ellis Island. It was Pavlik, it was changed to Pavlick. Course both mom's paternal and maternal grandparents had already changed their names at least four times if not more to hide the fact they were Jewish.

ANYWAY - I think it's likely the mention of Jesus and the bit about STM saying that Jesus needed him. They're probably ticked off about that. Too bad. I bet just like God, Jesus has a sense of humor and thought it was funny.

  18. You know how it goes - first an egg cup here and there; then the teaspoons start to vanish - pretty soon you'll find them walking off with the entire cookstove under their overcoat. I'd say a kitchen cabinet meeting is in order........ 7@=Q

  19. One of those dumb laws... here in Texas you can't shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel. I'm quite sure it's acceptable from the first or third, though. Poor buffalo.
I am embroidering that last one onto my next knitted bag, I think. XD

  20. You are back! (in the UAE I mean) It was a hard couple of days. People became feral. There were lootings and riots. But now all is good. STM is back. Amen.

  21. My personal thought is that the language is a definite influence, but more likely it's the public implied intimate relationship between a man and a woman by being in the same bed regardless of marital status. I recently read an amazingly written book entitled "Censoring an Iranian Love Story" by Shahriar Mandanipour and Sara Khalili describing all the different ways he has to write in order to avoid censorship. Basically, you read two books in one...one in one font as he'd like to write it and one in another font as he has to write it. Such a fascinating look into a different way of experiencing the world.

  22. I wonder if STM is banned in China.

  23. "Banned" is another way of saying, "noticed."

Those people have no sense of humor.

  24. Hello, It's Rachel, the ban-noticer. As far as I can tell you're still banned in the UAE but with my sneaky little VPN I'm still getting all the lentil-hating goodness! I'm moving to China in 10 days so I'll be able to report back on your status there too. My personal feeling is it's either the swearing or the Jewish thing, although how we still have the likes of Dlisted but not STM is beyond me. Much love to all!

  25. Oh my God!! The second quote -- that reminds me of an episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", about a couple who ambushed another couple and killed them in their apartment. One of the ways Goren and Eames established guilt with the couple is that they discovered that the female in the killer couple stole an egg cup from the murdered couple! Was your husband a fan of "L&O:CI", by any chance?
