My mental image involved a cross between one of those terribly tacky tourist shows on Pacific islands and that scene in Pride and Prejudice where Mary decides she's going to entertain the company on the piano and nobody's going to stop her...
there's a radio show in australia (called Hamish & Andy) that I listen to via podcast that uses a conch horn every time there's something awkward going on that needs the awkward silence to be broken. maybe papa just added to the awkwardness?
