Karen's notes: Today, lots of you non-Jews out there (and probably a number of Jews as well) are going to get an education! Lockshen is a flat egg noodle used in chicken soup or to make kugel, the noodle casserole that most Jews out there know too well from holiday family dinners. Here's a horrifyingly close-up serving of kugel:

A couple of confessions: 1) Kugel is delicious when it is made well, and I love it. I had three pieces last night at my mom's (although that was potato kugel). 2) I had no idea what lockshen was. We just called them "egg noodles." I listened to that audio 20 times, and finally emailed it to Adam totally stumped. He clued me in.
As for that second one, how sweet, in a creepy-way-to-ask-for-sex kind of way. And he didn't even say it in an ironic tone. Sleep Talkin' Man is going soft on us.

ReplyDeleteJust so you know, Lokshen literally means "Noodles" in Yiddish. A somewhat common Israeli proverb is "Don't feed me Lokshim", basically "Stop bullshitting me" :P

Oh, man. I really want some of my mom's Yom Kippur lokshim kuggel right now. Too bad that a) she only makes it to break the fast and b) it's passover.

ReplyDeleteI think STM is lonely and hungry. Poor Adam, his subconscious is telling us he misses you Karen. STM hasn't been nearly so arrogant this week. No "direct line to God" without you there. It's sweet really.
ReplyDeleteDon't ask me why, but Kugel sounds VERY yummy. I have never heard of it and I am not Jewish. I have had Jewish food in the past while growing up and friends invited me over for supper. I'm going recipe hunting now :)
ReplyDeletemy grandma used to make kugel, or as we called it lockshen pudding, served hot with cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon. oh it was the ultimate comfort food during my teenage years.

I have enjoyed other foods as matzo balls and potato soup and crackers in the past that i still find tasty today and do enjoy, thou have not tried kugel-lockshenning it as it be, deliscio to the eyes and tummywise...

ReplyDeleteHowever, in my upbringing threats of the lockshen strap were used to stop misbehaving children. The words, "Do you want me to get out the lockshen strap?" were accompanied by unbuckling of grandpa's leather belt! Since all the children ran screaming from the threat, no one ever found out what would happen if the lockshen strap did indeed come out. Which grandpa found very funny....

Oh! Kugel, eh? In South Africa, kugel = Jewish princess. Male kugels are bagels. How odd that they should be named for foodstuffs.

That bass punding against your chest is just as real as the heart beating inside of it. I guess love comes in all shapes and sizes. This interpretation of love associates the emotion with a rush.

ReplyDeleteThe secret of making a good lokshen kugel is, you don't just dampen the noodles with custard--- no, the noodles should be floating around in a vast pool of egg, milk, cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, sugar and raisins-- then it bakes into a rich custard and the noodles just tenderly hold it together.

And yes, it does certainly bring back memories, though my family was a fan of Raisin kugel in particular. I hated it when I was a kid, and now I can't get enough of it! Wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteNoodle kugel is one of my most favorite foods!!! It is part of my family's traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, we also eat blintzes, bagels and lox for Christmas brunch. That's what happens when you have one Jewish and one Christian parent!
