In the UK jelly can be both the gelatine-based dessert and a fruit preserve that contains no fruit pieces (as in redcurrant jelly, for example). When it comes to fruit preserves we just tend to use jam (with bits in) much more than jelly, is all.

ReplyDelete*chuckles*... the US is a big, big place. Many items/phrases in the US, vary by region, hence a lot of the arguing over Jelly/Jam/Jello/Preserves/Marmalade etc.
ReplyDeleteIn Canada, it gets even more confusing, because we have regional variations, some influenced by our British heritage, some by our US neighbors to the south, and some of our own making.
Pop/Soda/Soda-Pop/Coke/Cola is another one that varies from place to place.
Also, sofa/couch/lounger/chesterfield.
They may all have 'specific' dictionary meanings, but how they are actually used by people can vary a lot.
By the way, an american friend (upper NY state) insists that peaunut butter and jelly sandwiches in the US, means 'grape jelly' and says grape jelly is what is usually meant when someone refers to 'jelly'. In the east of Canada, 'peanut butter and jam' almost always implies strawberry jam.
Okay, who really cares whether it's jelly or Jell-o? Either way it's funny but you're just burying the funny under tons of unneeded and utterly confusing 'explanations.'
